Abstract
This poster examines the role of Black wet nurses in the colonial Caribbean, focusing on their complex position within white households. Through the analysis of a colonial poem, the project explores how these women were essential to the upbringing of white children yet blamed for moral decline and social shame. The study also draws connections to the “Mammy figure in American culture, highlighting the persistent marginalization of Black women despite their vital domestic roles.
