Abstract
In my thesis work, I am telling stories about the lives of Black Americans. I push and explore narratives on systemic oppression, racial disparities, health and mental illness, cultural appropriation, the disregard of Black life and safety to engage with history through the point of view of Black Americans and their experience. I am a part of a marginalized group that is oppressed in society and self-expression. In elevating my voice through this thesis project, I am declaring the truth. This thesis creates branches of positive representation as well as awareness, an outlet, and a resource that my community can gravitate towards. Elements such as hair, textile pattern, repetition of figure, text, and abstracted forms of community life and culture can be found in this body of print work. Using historical, political, and personal references I unveil the Black experience. Highlighting the displacement of Black bodies in America, and the ethnic disadvantages in healthcare, the justice system, education, and career are experiences not everyone shares. I invite my audience to further expand their understanding of systemic oppression. Through visual cues, I provide a look into my world. This includes an in-depth exploration of vulnerability, loss of identity, frustration, and the perpetual struggles of the Black community.
