Abstract
My senior project explores identity formation and the long-term effects of trauma through a critical analysis of Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson. This novel-in-verse follows Geryon, a winged boy who survives childhood sexual abuse and struggles to find connection and meaning in the aftermath. Through close reading and research on adolescent development, family dynamics, and the psychological effects of sexual assault, my project examines how trauma impacts self-expression, emotional regulation, and relationships. By weaving literary analysis with scholarly sources on mental health and identity theory, I aim to show how Carson gives voice to the internal struggles of survivors, ultimately revealing the possibility of healing, recognition, and resilience. This project not only deepens my understanding of literature's power to confront difficult subjects but also reflects my personal commitment to storytelling that centers marginalized and silenced experiences.
