Abstract
This essay explores contemporary Japanese horror films Ju-On: The Grudge (Takashi 2002), Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call) (Miike 2003), and Ringu (Nakata 1998) by analyzing key scenes with a feminist point of view, as well as divulging into the specific sound techniques used. By analyzing scenes using these two lenses, this essay aims to expand upon existing discussions on female representation by positing that sound design and contrapuntal sound in particular is used to further distort female forms in these films.
