Abstract
This project explores the portrayal of female characters in video games, specifically addressing the issues of sexualization and objectification. Over the years, the design of many female characters has been largely influenced by male-driven stereotypes, often focusing on physical appearance rather than depth of character. This study investigates how these portrayals impact both male and female players, exploring the ways they shape perceptions of gender roles and contribute to the normalization of harmful stereotypes in gaming culture. Through a detailed analysis of games like Stellar Blade and Marathon, the project examines the ongoing resistance to change in character designs and the industry's slow progress toward more realistic and respectful representations of women. Furthermore, the research discusses how these depictions can lead to negative real-world consequences, such as reinforcing toxic masculinity and discouraging female participation in gaming communities. This project highlights the need for more inclusive and thoughtful character designs in the future.
