Abstract
In this thesis, the author examines Rochester public school students’ perceptions of computer use in the classroom and at home, given their very limited access to school computers. The researcher surveyed 152 students from grades 4-6 using measures created by the author and modified according to teacher recommendations. Survey results showed that students had an overall positive perception of computers. Students saw computers as a ‘fun’ learning tool and used them play games, perform internet research, and type homework assignments. Study results showed that the students had overall better computer knowledge than their teachers had anticipated. Study implications include recommendations for integrating computer use in education, and for teachers and parents to be aware of children’s computer knowledge.
