Abstract
This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of cleanrooms, their importance in microelectronics, and their applications across industries such as semiconductors, optics, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, and more. It explains how cleanrooms evolved, how they are classified by particle counts (Federal Standards and ISO 14644), and why strict control of contamination is critical for yield and product performance. The training explores contamination sources (air, humans, facilities, water, chemicals, gases, and equipment) and the systems in place to mitigate them, including HEPA/ULPA filtration, gowning protocols, airflow control, and facility design. Additional considerations such as electrostatic discharge, vibration, temperature, and humidity are also discussed. Ultimately, cleanrooms must not only be built to exacting standards but also maintained through rigorous discipline and adherence to protocols, as even the smallest particles can impact advanced micro- and nano-scale manufacturing.
